Welding is not something I do very well. Matter of fact, I am plain terrible at it. We have all had something that is with cast iron that is cracked or needs to be rebuilt to make useable again. Usually the part that needs welding is very expensive, impossible to find a good replacement and/or you have to hire it out and that gets very pricey.
I was commenting to Ken the fellow that I bought my HD9X on how expensive it was to weld up the broken final drive housing and the complicated process they had to go through to weld it. He gave me some rod called the Super Gold rod from a company called LaGrange. He told me it was a very strong rod about 120000psi and would weld just about anything and would weld cast. He just loved it and used it all the time to fix things. But he did say it was more expensive that other rod but he thought it was well worth it and you did not want to use this if you had to machine the part.
I used the rod and does it weld. I can actually make a bead and get something to hold. I usually have to have my father-in-law make the weld. The company is in Irvington NE, and is called Farmer's Choice. I found them on the web after I was given their website name by Ken. I drove over and bought a bunch of different types of rod. I did buy what they call the maintenance pack which has a number of different kinds of rods. In there they have a cast iron rod "Super Cast" that works on low voltage DC or AC and does not require preheating or any of that nonsense. I welded up a housing and ground it down and you cannot tell where I did the weld. They have all sorts of rod.
