My brother and I, we love mechanic. We have a 270 square meter workshop, and inside, you can find 2 lathes, 1 milling machine, 1 boring machine, 2 drilling machines and everything you need for welding. Near my brother house, there is a forest with a very inclined ground. Because of the clay, this ground becomes very slippery when it rains. My brother need wood, so he usually use a tractor to move the cut trees. The 1st one he used was our grand father one. It is a Steyr model 188, 28 HP, Diesel 2 cylinders. Made in Austria in 1964.

This tractor was not strong enough, and in 1992, he bought a 1965 Renault Master 2. This tractor is equipped with a 3200 Cm3 water cooled diesel 4 cylinder engine, made by Renault witch develops 55HP. This engine is also used on a little lorry with a different injection pump. In this case, it develops 76HP. Our Master has now the lorry engine. It also has been equipped with a hydraulic front lifter.

Unfortunately, this tractor has only 2WD and it is impossible to move when the ground is wet, so when a friend of mine said in 1998 that his brother wanted to sell a little crawler, we bought it. It is a Lamborghini CV39. Made in Italy during the 60’s, it has a air cooled diesel 3 cylinders witch can produce 39 HP. It also has a 3-point hydraulic lifter and a PTO. This machine doesn’t cause trouble on the ground because it weight around 3 tons.

On the other hand, I think it is not strong enough (or we want more than it can) and it is impossible to ride along the forest every time. Sometimes, we were blocked, unable to go in a way or in the other. One day where we had to let trees in the forest after been blocked, we were very disappointed. My brother said:

-“ If we had a dozer, it would be better.

-         Let’s try to find one.

-         We could find an old one witch is not used any more.

A moment after, we were in the car, looking for a dozer. 2 or 3 hours after, we have seen this machine, sleeping near a road transport company. We stop the car, and start checking the machine. Chains seems good, body correct. The blade is destroyed, but we can repair it. When we were back home, we decided to contact the owner. He was ready to sell it, and the price was correct, but he said that he wanted us to see it running before selling. We went back meeting him and he started it. What a lot of noise! There was a lot of work to do: The big hose witch connect the bottom of the radiator to the motor was cut, 10 inch of dust under the motor and all over the frame of the machine. Glasses were broken, the seat had to be repaired and the engine starter switch was not working any more. The owner said that he bought it near Lyon to restore some road in forest and he only changed the cylinder head gasket. After he delivered it, we started to dismantle it.

1st,  we removed the radiator guard door, the hood, water and transmission radiators, generator, water pump, the fan and the front power take-off. We have cleaned all the parts, changed all the seals we were able to touch and removed around 100Kg of dust from the frame, only under the engine. When we dismantled the turbocharger, we saw that the 2 bearings, the thrust collar and the thrust bearing were in wrong condition. We only cleaned every think and kept it carefully. When we dismantled the water pump, we changed the bearings and the seals on the pump and on the oil cooler. We also changed bearings of the generator, of the fan, and of the front power take-off. Before reinstallation of all these elements, we decided to check the valve lash setting. When we removed the cylinder head cover, we saw rust, water and a lot of dust!!!???!. What will we do? At this moment of the story, we had all the manuals (from binder book and Jeansales). We knew that the blocking of the cylinder head require a complete process and we thought that the guys who exchanged the cylinder head gasket did not do it in the right way. So let’s try to remove the cylinder head, we will see how it is inside. You can see on the photos that it is not so bad, and now, the cylinder head is blocked with the correct torque. We only cleaned well, lap the valves, checked the fuel injectors.

After that, change of the engine oil, air filter, exchange all the rubber hoses, all the bad screws.

At the moment, it’s running, but without turbocharger. We wanted to control if the transmission work well. We saw that the HI-LO range was not working. It was only the axle witch was worn. The main point is the turbo. We have a lot of problem to find parts in France for a low price. Next step will be the drain of the transmission oil, restoring the seat, repair the blade, change glasses and paint it. What is the corresponding colour in the RAL grades or the DuPont reference for the Federal yellow ?
